UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Founded on 4 November 1945 in Paris, it aims to support peace, the relationship between different cultures and the environment in which we find ourselves.
One of its most important initiatives is the World Heritage List, which contains 1090 places worldwide chosen for their outstanding cultural value, in order to preserve and protect them for future generations.
Italy has the largest number of sites inscribed in the List, seven of which are located in Sicily. In addition to the Aeolian Islands are the Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina, the archaeological area of Agrigento, Syracuse and the caves of Pantalica, the late Baroque towns of the Val di Noto, Mount Etna, Palermo and the Cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale.
