Mater Ecclesiae or Mother of the Church is one of the names of the Virgin Mary, proclaimed in 1964 by Pope Paul VI to recall Our Lady’s maternal closeness and the help she had always given to the Church throughout the ages. The tree of life is the last stage that the pilgrim can reach, once purified, after passing through heaven’s gate (ianuacoeli).
