In church buildings, the choir is an area for the singers or monks. It is usually located behind the high altar, in abbey churches, representing the final part of the church, close to the apse. However, in cathedrals, the choir is located in the presbytery area, in front of the altar or in the main nave. In the medieval period, especially in Romanesque art, completely new and daring types of choir were designed with the addition of the deambulatory. This was a corridor that followed the semicircular shape of the apse, placed after the presbytery and into which various chapels opened. In these cases, the corridor fulfilled the processional functions.
